“Strengthening small farms – promoting cocoa cultivation”

πŸ” The development of disease-resistant cocoa varieties and new cultivation methods have contributed to cocoa cultivation in Costa Rica being economical and competitive again. But despite high world market prices for cocoa from Costa Rica, smallholders and their families benefit little from it. In this project, you will develop strategies and approaches on how to counteract this.

As part of your participation, you will support a partner institution in Germany and countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Southeastern Europe for three or six months. Together with other participants, you will implement a project that contributes to global sustainable development. Sounds interesting? Project aims

– International Cooperation between participants and partner (countries) in the aim of Global Goals.

– Intention of ASA-Seminars: SDGs oriented (sustainability, diversity, global justice), preparation to project needs, methods of global learning.

– Project focus: intercultural cooperation, teamwork as tandems, professional development by doing practical work.

– Long-lasting engagement: function as a multiplier.

Programme structure

The ASA program starts with your participation in preparatory seminars lasting several days. The seminars take place between April and June. If you have been selected for a six-month project, your first project phase in Germany will already begin during this time.

After the ASA seminars, you will travel to a country in Africa, Asia, Latin America or Southeastern Europe. Guided by your partner institution, you will work on your project on a wide variety of topics.

After the project is before the RENew seminar. Under the motto “Reflection, Commitment and Networking“, you will look back on your experiences and network with the other participants once again.

Preparatory seminar:
Accompanied by former participants, seminar leaders and speakers, you will acquire specialist knowledge on sustainable development topics at the preparatory seminars. For example, you will gain insights into German development policy and explore the question of how the 17 Sustainable Development Goals can contribute to a fairer future. You will also critically deal with topics such as postcolonialism and your own role in the world. In addition to development policy topics, you will also learn practical skills such as project management or methods of conflict resolution in workshops and tutorials.

The preparatory seminars take place between April and July. You will take part in two preparatory seminars. One seminar will take place online, and one on-site in a seminar house.

July/December: Second project phase in partner country (duration 85-90 days) -> Evaluation
