The collaboration between Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences (HSRW) and Makerere University (MAK) in Uganda continues to thrive through the SDG Partnership Project, “Strengthening Education and Research Capacity for Enhancing Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Natural Resource Use.” This initiative, funded by DAAD, aims to enhance academic exchange and capacity building between the two institutions.
Recently, HSRW had the honor of hosting a delegation from Makerere University, consisting of esteemed professors Mugizi Francis and Enoch Ssekuubwa. Their visit was filled with enriching activities that highlighted the importance of cross-cultural collaboration in academia.
During their stay, the professors engaged in several lectures addressing critical topics relevant to both institutions. One notable session was led by Professor Oliver Serfling, who presented on “Fieldwork and Data Collection in Biodiversity Research in Uganda.” This lecture offered valuable insights into the methodologies employed in biodiversity research, underscoring the significance of fieldwork in understanding ecological dynamics. Another key lecture was delivered by Professor Dirk Reiser, focusing on “Sustainable Tourism Development in Uganda: State of the Arts and Prospects,” which examined the challenges and opportunities within Uganda’s tourism sector.
A highlight of the visit was the opportunity for HSRW students to interact directly with Professors Mugizi and Ssekuubwa during their presentations and seminars. Students actively engaged by asking insightful questions, fostering meaningful discussions that enriched their learning experience. This interaction allowed students to gain firsthand knowledge from leading experts in their fields.
The visiting professors also explored HSRW’s state-of-the-art facilities, including a tour of the university’s tropical greenhouse, which serves as a vital resource for research and education in plant sciences. This visit showcased innovative approaches to sustainable agriculture being developed at HSRW. Beyond academic engagements, the delegation participated in local tourism activities in Kleve, allowing them to appreciate the region’s cultural and natural beauty while connecting with local stakeholders. A significant highlight was their session at the Fablab in Kamp-Lintfort, an EU technological hub that promotes innovation among researchers and industry professionals. Here, they gained insights into advanced technological applications that can be leveraged for research and development.
The visit served as a platform for cross-cultural development and capacity building. Engaging with various stakeholders at HSRW enabled Professors Mugizi and Ssekuubwa to share their experiences while learning about innovative practices in Germany. Such exchanges are crucial for fostering mutual understanding and collaboration between institutions.
This partnership aims to strengthen academic ties between Europe and Africa, promoting knowledge sharing that addresses global challenges such as sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and economic development. The recent visit from Makerere University exemplifies the success of the SDG Partnership Project facilitated by DAAD funding. Through lectures, facility tours, and stakeholder engagement, Professors Mugizi Francis and Enoch Ssekuubwa gained valuable knowledge that will undoubtedly enrich their academic endeavors back home.
As HSRW continues to build on this partnership, it reaffirms its commitment to fostering international collaboration that benefits both students and faculty alike. This initiative not only enhances educational opportunities but also strengthens global networks essential for addressing pressing societal issues through collaborative research and innovation.
